Printers tend to fail at exactly the wrong moment. Before replacing one, check the basics. Many home printer problems come down to a connection, a stuck print queue, a driver, paper, or a device that quietly switched networks.
Check the simple physical things
Make sure the printer is on, has paper, has no obvious jam, and shows no warning light or message. If it is connected by cable, reseat the connection. If it is wireless, confirm that the printer and computer are on the same home network.
Look at the print queue
A single stuck job can stop everything behind it. Open the print queue on your computer, note any message you see, and cancel a job only if you are comfortable doing so.
Restart in the right order
Restarting the printer, then the computer, can clear a temporary connection issue. Give each device a moment to come back before trying the print again.
Keep the error message
A photo of an error screen or a note of the exact wording gives a support person a much better starting point than “it will not print.”
